Welcome Message June 2018

South Africa's Youth Month is celebrated and commemorated in June each year with June 16 commemorated as Youth Day to mark the uprising of students against the apartheid regime in 1976.

This year marks the 42nd Anniversary since the student uprising which became a turning point in the struggle for liberation against the apartheid regime. The students arose and rightfully demanded equal, accessible and quality education from the apartheid government. Those students stood shoulder to shoulder and toe to toe against a regime that sought to impose its minority language and being to the oppressed vast majority of South Africa.

In line with South Africa's tradition to commemorate the Youth Month as a historic month marking the struggles and contribution by young people towards a free and democratic South Africa, the country and the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) will this year continue to host month-long activities.

This year's Youth Month also takes place during the celebration of the centenary year of Nelson Mandela. The South African Government as well as provincial governments are hosting various activities under the theme for Youth Month 2018:  Live the Legacy: Towards A Socio-Economically Empowered Youth.

The South African Embassy in Ankara wishes all youth around the world well and a happy and bright future.
