South Africa Freedom Month
24-28 April 2018
The South African Embassy will be celebrating South Africa’s Freedom Month with a number of activities in Istanbul.
The highlight of the year is South Africa’s celebration of the Centenary Year of Former President Nelson Mandela under the theme ‘Be the Legacy’. The former President is the first democratically elected President of South Africa since freedom and independence from the Apartheid regime was achieved on 27 April 1994.
The South African Embassy will also be hosting a number of centenary lectures regarding the life of Nelson Mandela at various universities throughout Turkey.
To further celebrate South Africa’s 24th year of freedom, the South African Embassy has the pleasure of also hosting former President Kgalema Motlanthe in Turkey. The former President will be addressing various universities in Istanbul on the Centenary of Nelson Mandela as well as attending the planned South Africa-Turkey Trade and Investment Seminar to be held from 24-25 April in Istanbul. A Media Breakfast on 24 April and an art exhibition entitled “Mandela’s Suitcase and Colours From the World’ will also be held in Istanbul, opening on 26 April at the Kemer Golf Club. The same exhibition will be held in Ankara in September and possibly also in Izmir and Mersin later in the year.
The South African Embassy will be hosting a Nelson Mandela Centenary reception on 27 April and together with Kemer Country Club will host the Nelson Mandela Centenary Golf Fund-Raising Day on 28 April. The Kemer Country Club can be contacted for further enquiries at telephone: 212-239 7010.
South Africa’s Minister of Basic Education, Ms M Mothshekga, will also be visiting Turkey during this time. We very much look forward to hosting the Minister of Education and strengthening our already strong education ties with Turkey which currently hosts around 200 South African students.
