VISIT TO THE CITY OF IZMIR
The Counsellor of the South African Embassy in Ankara, Mr Frank Steyn visited Izmir city to strengthen the economic and tourism relations with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality in the beginning of December 2021.
During a meeting with Mr. Buğra Gökçe, City Manager of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, the increasing trade volume between Turkey and South Africa is discussed on the basis of the proximity of the cities. The skill exchange in shipbuilding and wine expertise was also discussed.
The Counsellor promoted the participation of South Africa to Dubai EXPO2020, where South Africa’s appeal is being promoted. The Expo is a hub for international trade and intended to create further opportunities for investment.
Mr Steyn also held a meeting with Mr Yusuf Oz Turk, President of IMEAK Chamber of Shipping Izmir Branch and discussed the possible co-operation with Chamber of Shipping on Ocean economy on Operation Phakisa, skill exchange and maritime education. The internship and scholarship for South African students in the shipbuilding industry was also considered during the meeting.
On 2 December 2021, Mr Steyn attended the Opening Ceremony of the Travel Turkey Izmir Tourism Fair, which is the fastest and most reliable way to establish communication and business connections. The Fair is organised under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey, with cooperation of IZFAS and TURSAB Exhibition Services Inc. and the 15th Travel Turkey İzmir Tourism Fair held in Fuar İzmir on 2-4 December 2021.
The Counsellor had the chance to greet Mr Erhan Berkmen from TURSAB (Association of Turkish Travel Agencies) to thank for the invitation and cooperation and informed Mr Berkmen that December is the South African Tourism Month for EXPO2020 currently being held in DUBAI.
South African Embassy Honorary Consul in Izmir, Mr Tamer Taskın accompanied the Counsellor during his İzmir visit. They discussed to expand the collaboration in promoting South Africa by tourism and investments.
Wine production, vineyards and training in the Industry, and its ability to attract tourism is one of the areas where Turkish and South African wine owners can build cooperation. The Counsellor met the owner of Urla Wines and Uzbas Agricultural Products Company, Mr Can Ortabas. Mr Cuneyt Giden from Urla wines took Mr Steyn for a tour of the Vineyard and cellar and its ability to use environmentally friendly methods of producing wine.
