April: South Africa’s Freedom Month
April is proving to be an eventful month for South Africa. Not only have we bid farewell to struggle icon, Mrs Winnie Madikizela Mandela, but we are also bidding farewell to another icon, this time one of diplomacy. Ambassador George Nene passed away on 6 April 2018. Ambassador Nene was a seasoned diplomat and life-long revolutionary who lived his life serving the people of South Africa. The role that Ambassador Nene played in the liberation of our country cannot be measured. Ambassador Nene did not only occupy death defying trenches of the liberation struggle, he was counted amongst those who held the flag of country flying high in the process of carving the role of South Africa on the international platforms. His role and contribution is the legacy that we will always treasure as we continue to work towards the transformation of world governance. We extend condolences to his family, friends and the diplomatic community who knew him. May he rest in peace.
Freedom Month is also a cause for celebration, this year doubly so. Not only are we celebrating South Africa’s 24th year of independence, freedom and democracy, we are also celebrating the Centennial Year of South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela.
The South African Embassy will be hosting a number of events throughout the year, including memorial lectures at several universities, art exhibitions celebrating President Mandela’s life, a fundraising golf tournament as well as South Africa’s Freedom Day on 27 April.
The South African Embassy looks forward to hosting our friends and colleagues at these events.
