Support for EXPO by South Africa

Support has been rendered by South Africa to Izmir’s nomination for EXPO 2020. The South African delegation visited Izmir to participate at the 81st Izmir International Fair. They have met with businessmen and made bilateral meetings and introduced new projects to improve the trade volume.

South Africa’s Ambassador to Ankara, Mr Vika Khumalo and South Africa’s Honorary Consul Mr Tamer Taskin made assessments on the improving relations between the two countries.

Our vote is for Izmir

Ambassador Khumalo stated that in November a broader delegation will visit Izmir to take concrete steps for possible collaborations. Ambassador Khumalo also emphasized that Izmir and Cape Town as cities are very alike and the process of twinning the both cities are still ongoing. Ambassador Khumalo said “Within this frame, on 15th of September the Mayor of Cape Town will visit Izmir. We will as a country support the nomination of Izmir in EXPO 2020. We believe that Izmir will do this organization in the best way.” Mr Taskin also emphasized on the narrowing export markets of Europe and indicated that Africa offers great opportunities in this regard.

South Africa’s Ambassador to Ankara, Mr Vika Khumalo and South Africa’s Honorary Consul Mr Tamer Taskin made assessments on the improving relations between the two countries. Ambassador Khumalo indicated that they were very happy to participate in IEF and added that Izmir is one of the most developed cities in Turkey and we have participated this fair to be a part of this change. This fair is a good source for our trade volume. Our aim is to improve our trade volumes. Ambassador Khumalo also indicated that the first 6 month of the year the trade volume has come to 500 million dollars and the target is to extend this to 1 billion dollars by the end of the year. During the fair days we will be in contact with businessmen and we are willing to carry the opportunities into the next step.

The President of Aegean Region Chamber of Industry, Mehmet Tiryaki, The CEO of Yasar Holding, Mehmet Aktas, the President of Aegean Leather and Products Exporters Union Jak Galiko, the Aegean Region President of TURSAB, Riza Gencay and member of EBSO Ned’m Kalpaklioglu have attended this meeting.

He also emphasized the 11 identified sectors with the most important ones as energy, automotive and mining. He also indicated that there are cohesions and competitiveness in these sectors for both countries and added that there are advantages due to our similar economic structure. Taskin also indicated that there can be many collaborations on the defence industry as well. He also added that “ Recently there are many visits done from the African continent. They are willing to do business in many fields. We thank them for their support in EXPO .”
